Enable .htaccess and url rewriting in Apache for Windows

When I try to setup PHP and Apache in my notebook, I try to enable the .htaccess setting in apache’s httpd.conf. After I tried for a few hours (YES, a few hours) at my notebook and google-ing on the internet, finally I found the complete solution.

I record the steps here so that it can help those who want to enable .htaccess and url rewriting in Apache for Windows and also for my own reference in future.

1. Make sure you have setup apache and php correctly. Make sure that you can run php scripts without any problem.

2. Use notepad to open httpd.conf config file. Make use the line “LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so” is un-commented.

3. Under “<directory XXX></directory>” section, change the line “AllowOverride None” to “AllowOverride All“.

4. Change the line “AccessFileName .htaccess” to “AccessFileName htaccess“. This is because in Windows, we can’t have a file with filename that starts with a dot.

5. Save the changed file and restart Apache Windows Service. You can then use the file htaccess to process your url rewritting.

Spam emails are getting smarter

Recently I feel that spam emails are getting smarter. Every morning when I open up my mailbox, I always see 2 to 3 spam mails in my inbox which suppose to be delivered into spam/junk/bulk folder.

I am using Gmail, yahoo mail and hotmail. Here are the statistic of spam emails.

  • Yahoo! Mail – 0 to 1 spam per day
  • Gmail – 1 to 2 spams per day
  • Hotmail – 3 to 4 spams per day

Are spammers getting smarter? Or spam filter become weaker?

Haze Returns

SupermanHaze Returns! I smell the haze once I get out from my car towards my house just now. It become stronger and stronger this few days. It’s back!

The haze make few feel sick this few days… make me feel dizzy… damm… must drink more water!

Renovation for my blog

I uploaded my new theme last few days and it runs without any problem (so far).

I also deleted the “Archives” page because I already added it at my sidebar.

I also deleted the “WordPress Theme” page because I feel the old theme is quite ugly.. hehe.

I also added a “About” page.

Just now when I browse to my “About” page, I saw a Google Video Ads. This is the first time I see this type of ads and somemore it is on my own blog :)

Page Strength

Oh… long time didn’t blog about things happening on the internet. Today I found a nice tool which I want try out, I found it at LiewCF … but unfoturnately, the site keep showing this error message:

DEBUG INFORMATION:
Connect: Lost connection to MySQL server during query

Maybe the site has too much of visitors at the time I visit. I will try it out later.

The tool I mentioned is call “Page Strength”. It is a site that tells you the importance and visibility of a web page. It is like Google PageRank but I think this one seems more interesting. Page Strength use many factors to determine the “strength” of a site:

  • Links pointing to full URL
  • Links pointing to domain
  • Position at Google for first four workds of title tag on target URL
  • Age of Domain
  • Links from domains with .edu TLDs
  • Links from domains with .gov TLDs
  • Alexa Rank
  • Domain name visibility
  • Internal Link Percent
  • Number of search results for URL search at del.icio.us
  • Listing in DMOZ
  • Links found in Wikipedia
  • Google Pagerank of full URL and Domain

Anyway, two of the strengths from “Page Strenth” are based on Google’s statistic.
